Nihan Devecioglu – Vox, Loops
Jeffrey Lependorf – Shakuhachi (traditional Japanese bamboo flute)
Barkin Engin – Live Electronics
What the voice and shakuhachi (traditional Japanese bamboo flute) both
have in common is that they are mechanisms for transforming breath into
song. “Breath, song” plays with the interplay of voice, electronics and
bamboo flute, incorporating ancient and contemporary modes of shaping
sound, moving between newly composed and improvised sections. The Voice is
chosen as the fundamental source for explorations in sound and to develop
independent songs in different musical styles. Through this project we
created a common ground where different sorts of influences might
interweave and merge. Nihan has received the Music Grant Award 2013 from
City of Munich Department of Arts and Culture to develop a cross-cultural
collaborative work called “breath, song.” The grant provides funding to
allow the work to be presented in Germany, Turkey and NY this fall/winter.
